TIMELINE INSTRUCTIONS

History of Computers Timeline Project

Many ideas, designs, & inventions lead to what we know as the modern computer. You are going to create a timeline of important events in the history of computers. Use the Internet to research and find the events in Step 1.

Materials needed: ( PERIODS- 4TH, 5TH, 6TH WILL BE MADE IN WORD)
• ½ piece of poster board (any color) cut width-wise or tape two pieces of construction paper together
• markers, construction paper, colored pencils, magazine/newspaper clippings, printouts from the Internet, etc. to create your timeline (be creative!)

Step 1: Determine the year of each of the following events in computer history (some may be a range instead of a specific year.) Be sure you write down where you got the information from (i.e. you will need to cite your sources.)

➢ Bill Gates and Paul Allen found Microsoft.--1975
➢ Intel introduces the 8008 microprocessor.--1972
➢ John Ambrose Fleming develops the vacuum tube (also called the diode valve.)--1904
➢ The first transistor is created at Bell Laboratories.--1947
➢ IBM introduces its PC (or Personal Computer.)--1981
➢ Working for Texas Instruments, Jack Kilby creates the first integrated circuit.--1958
➢ Tim Berners-Lee develops the World Wide Web.--1991
➢ The ENIAC (electronic numerical integrator and computer) was constructed at the University of Pennsylvania.--1943
➢ Charles Babbage designs/proposes the creation of the Difference Engine.--1822
➢ Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs form the Apple Computer Company.--1976
➢ Include 2 other events in the history of computers (ones not listed above) on your timeline. Draw/color them so they match and are easily recognizable as the extra events you included. (Example computer phone-iphone)
___
12 total events from section 1

Step 2: Follow these guidelines to create your timeline (read them all before you start):

a) Draw the timeline width-wise from left to right on the poster board or on the taped two pieces of construction paper. List oldest date on the far left, working across to the most recent date.
b) Clearly label each event on your timeline – be sure to include the date!
c) Illustrate 7 of the events in Step 1 by drawing or including a picture on your timeline above or next to that event.
d) Include your birthday on the timeline.
e) Include your parents’ birthdays on the timeline.
f) Include your grandparents’ birthdays on the timeline.

g) BE CREATIVE!
___
3 total events from section 2 + 12 from section 1 = 15 total events that should be displayed on timeline

Step 3: On the back of your poster board write:

a) Your name--ONLY FIRST NAME FOR BLOG, BOTH FOR PC COMPUTERS!
b) Your class period
c) A source of information for each item on your timeline under Step 1. If you found multiple items from a single source, just list that source once and list the items you found beside it.

See back of this page for grading scale/rubric. You must turn this handout in with your project in order to receive a grade. This is a major project; it will count as a double daily work grade.
